The first history of The Temple, then called Adath Israel, was written in 1903 in honor of the 60th anniversary of our founding charter. Its author, Charles Goldsmith, was a distinguished President of Temple. The work was published in 1906 in a commemorative booklet which includes photographs of our early rabbis and buildings, and the texts of several speeches delivered at the dedication of our Third Street Temple. Most eloquent among these addresses is one entitled "The Congregation in Israel" delivered by Rabbi David Philipson, a central figure in the early period of American Reform.
