The Temple in Louisville was the first congregation in America to adopt the first prayer book of American Reform. Isaac Mayer Wise delivered a sermon and his first printings of "Minhag America" on August 8, 1857. This was a month before the first advertisements were listed in Wise's American Israelite and two months before his own congregation would move to adopt the text. Pictured above is a High Holy Day edition of the prayer book, published in 1866, which was found behind the walls of an old apartment building being demolished during Louisville's "Urban Renewal" of the 1960's. The scattered pages were retrieved by the workmen and returned to The Temple more than a century after its original adoption by the congregation.
